Ingrid Becomes the Second "Atlantic" Hurricane of 2013

The most recent NHC public advisory bulletin for Ingrid states that:

INGRID [IS] EXPECTED TO MAKE LANDFALL IN NORTHEASTERN MEXICO LATER TODAY. MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS 75 MPH (120 KM/H). MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE 989 MB (29.21 INCHES).

A HURRICANE WARNING IS IN EFFECT FOR CABO ROJO TO LA PESCA.

A HURRICANE WATCH IS IN EFFECT FOR NORTH OF LA PESCA TO BAHIA ALGODONES.

A TROPICAL STORM WARNING IS IN EFFECT FOR NORTH OF LA PESCA TO RIO SAN FERNANDO, AND SOUTH OF CABO ROJO TO TUXPAN

PREPARATIONS TO PROTECT LIFE AND PROPERTY IN THE HURRICANE WARNING AREA SHOULD BE RUSHED TO COMPLETION.

At least nineteen people have been killed in Mexico, which is being battered by two powerful storms.

Hurricane Ingrid has caused floods and sent thousands to emergency shelter on Mexico's Gulf Coast. It is expected to make landfall later on Monday.

On the Pacific coast, Tropical Storm Manuel has brought two days of torrential rains and caused widespread damage.

The area around the seaside resort of Acapulco has been badly affected.

The severe weather led to the cancellation of Independence Day celebrations in many Mexican towns.

Thousands of people have been forced to leave their homes.

On the Gulf of Mexico, more than 6,000 people have been evacuated ahead of Hurricane Ingrid – a category one storm.

In their 7:00 AM CDT bulletin the NHC say that:

INGRID WEAKENS TO A TROPICAL STORM AS IT MAKES LANDFALL
NEAR LA PESCA. HEAVY RAINS [ARE] SPREADING INLAND.

MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS 65 MPH (100 KM/H). MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE 991 MB (29.26 INCHES)

INGRID IS EXPECTED TO PRODUCE 10 TO 15 INCHES OF RAIN
OVER A LARGE PART OF EASTERN MEXICO, WITH ISOLATED AMOUNTS OF 25 INCHES POSSIBLE, ESPECIALLY IN AREAS OF MOUNTAINOUS TERRAIN. THESE RAINS ARE LIKELY TO RESULT IN LIFE-THREATENING FLASH FLOODS AND MUD SLIDES.

The BBC reports this morning that:

Residents of eastern Mexico were hit by Hurricane Ingrid, which was downgraded to a tropical storm shortly before it made landfall on Monday morning near the town of La Pesca.

Mexican authorities have declared a state of emergency in more than 20 towns in eastern Tamaulipas state.

More than 20,000 people were evacuated in the state of Veracruz. Twelve people died when a landslide near the town of Altotonga buried workers trying to clear a road from debris and passengers waiting in a bus to pass.

At least 20 highways and 12 bridges were damaged, according to Veracruz's civil protection authority. In Guerrero, 9,000 people remain in shelters after their homes were flooded

Residents living along the river Panuco have been evacuated as it is feared it could break its banks later on Tuesday.
