Humberto Forecast to Become First Atlantic Hurricane of 2013 Later Today

After a very long wait it looks as though the first Atlantic hurricane of the 2013 season will be announced later today. Currently Humberto is a mere tropical storm, but according to the latest National Hurricane Centre public advisory bulletin:

AT 0900 UTC THE CENTER OF TROPICAL STORM HUMBERTO WAS LOCATED NEAR LATITUDE 14.4 NORTH, LONGITUDE 26.6 WEST. HUMBERTO IS MOVING TOWARD THE WEST-NORTHWEST NEAR 9 MPH (15 KM/H). A TURN TO THE NORTHWEST WITH A DECREASE IN FORWARD SPEED IS EXPECTED LATER TODAY, FOLLOWED BY A TURN TO THE NORTH ON WEDNESDAY.

MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS HAVE INCREASED TO NEAR 65 MPH (100 KM/H) WITH HIGHER GUSTS. ADDITIONAL STRENGTHENING IS EXPECTED, AND HUMBERTO IS FORECAST TO BECOME A HURRICANE LATER TODAY.

TROPICAL-STORM-FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 80 MILES (130 KM) FROM THE CENTER. THE ESTIMATED MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE IS 998 MB (29.47 INCHES).

and so the NHC thankfully currently reports:

HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND – NONE

However in other news from the NHC this morning, they are now issuing new advisories about Gabrielle. According to the latest one:

GABRIELLE REGENERATES INTO A TROPICAL STORM SOUTH OF BERMUDA. TROPICAL STORM WARNING IN EFFECT FOR BERMUDA.

As they predicted yesterday, in their latest public advisory bulletin the NHC now report that:

HUMBERTO BECOMES THE FIRST HURRICANE OF THE SEASON OVER THE FAR EASTERN ATLANTIC.

HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND – NONE

Meanwhile Tropical Storm Gabrielle has managed to just avoid Bermuda. According to this morning's 06:00 UTC bulletin:

CENTER OF GABRIELLE PASSING WEST-SOUTHWEST OF BERMUDA. TROPICAL STORM CONDITIONS WILL CONTINUE ON BERMUDA THROUGH THIS MORNING.

GABRIELLE IS EXPECTED TO PRODUCE RAINFALL AMOUNTS OF 2 TO 4 INCHES OVER BERMUDA WITH ISOLATED MAXIMUM TOTALS OF 6 INCHES POSSIBLE.

A STORM SURGE OF 2 TO 3 FEET ABOVE NORMAL TIDE LEVELS IS EXPECTED ON BERMUDA. IN ADDITION ROUGH SURF CONDITIONS WILL CONTINUE TO AFFECT BERMUDA TODAY.

According to NHC public advisory bulletin #20 for Humberto:

HUMBERTO WEAKENS TO A TROPICAL STORM.

TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 205 MILES (335 KM) FROM THE CENTER. THE ESTIMATED MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE IS 991 MB (29.26) INCHES.

HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND – NONE.

According to NHC public advisory bulletin #24 for Humberto:

HUMBERTO BECOMES A POST-TROPICAL CYCLONE. EXPECTED TO REGENERATE IN A COUPLE OF DAYS.

As you can see, the prognosis is that Humberto will become a hurricane once again on Thursday. The surf forecast for a week today at my closest surf break is currently rated by Magic Seaweed at 5 stars!
