Long Island Power – Long Island

Long Island Power Outage Map – Long Island

The Long Island Power Authority issued a press release on Saturday November 10th 2012 stating that:

In flood impacted areas, LIPA has repaired and where possible, energized the power. However, while there is power in the neighborhoods, severe damage to the homes themselves prevents the homeowner from connecting to the electric grid. Local officials and LIPA estimate 55,000 customers on Long Island and in the Rockaways could be powered, however if the damage to the homes is too severe and repairs to home or an inspection must be completed before the house can be reconnected to the grid. On Long Island the bulk of these are in Island Park, Oceanside and the East Rockaway area, with smaller pockets in other south shore communities.

In Nassau, 250 surveyors are out in the field, with teams of technicians and electric servicemen following closely behind to re-energize those premises that are found to be safe. Those areas include Bellmore, Massapequa, Massapequa Park, Merrick, Seaford, Wantagh, Baldwin, Baldwin Harbor, East Rockaway, Island Park, Lynbrook, and Oceanside.

Here's how the LIPA power outage map looks this morning:

Most of the outages that occurred as a result of the combined effects of  Hurricane Sandy and winter storm "Athena" are now concentrated in Long Island.

It's the evening of Sunday November 4th 2012, and the outage numbers from the Long Island Power Authority have dropped from over 400,000 to under 300,000 since this morning. That sounds very impressive, until you discover the reason why. Here's how the LIPA outage map looks at this moment, after you click the red banner at the top:

Unfortunately it sounds as though around 100,000 LIPA customers along the south shore of Long Island will have to wait long past the Wednesday November 7th  restoration date that LIPA are currently quoting for most of their customers still without electricity. They:

Currently estimate that there are up to 100,000 customers from the most severely flooded areas on Long Island whose homes and businesses currently may be unable to receive power. LIPA is working with local authorities in those communities to determine when these homes and businesses will be fit to safely receive electric service.

The Rockaways, Long Beach, and the south shore of Long Island are communities that were hit hardest by Hurricane Sandy and they remain a restoration priority. Safety remains a big concern as many homes and businesses have been flooded severely, which has raised a potential safety risk due to possible water intrusion into the customer owned electric panels, wiring or appliances.

In Rockaway, LIPA has mobilized an estimated 100 restoration crews and has established an operation center in Rockaway Beach. LIPA is working closely with the NYPD, FDNY and NYCHA to energize traffic safety and streetlights. In Long Beach, we are developing a plan and working with the City to identify and implement a process to safely restore power.

In south shore communities, LIPA has restored power to most of the main lines that supply electricity along a west to east boundary across the south shore of Long Island established by Atlantic Avenue, Merrick Road and Montauk Highway. We are developing a plan and working with the local communities to identify and implement a process to safely restore power.

It's the morning of Tuesday October 30th 2012. Hurricane Sandy crossed the coast of New Jersey yesterday evening, and (amongst other things) subjected Long Island to an unprecedented storm surge. Here's how the Long Island Power Authority outage map looks at this moment:

At 10 PM on Monday August 29th 2011 Long Island Power Authority reported that:

Total of affected customers from Hurricane Irene was 523,000. As of 10 p.m. Monday, 198,000 customers have been restored. The customers that remain affected by Hurricane Irene are 325,000.

As work on critical care facilities continues, LIPA is working to repair transmission lines, high-voltage lines and distribution lines to restore power to its customers.

Earlier on Monday they said that:

Hurricane Irene has left in its wake over 523,000 outages affecting almost half of the customers on Long Island. LIPA and National Grid have already begun to address the damage to the transmission and distribution system and have restored power to 125,000 customers. The damage occurred to approximately 45% of LIPA’s system.

Fire Island was de-energized during the storm, the substations have now been re-energized and distribution is scheduled to be energized later today for Fire Island, Captree and Robert Moses.

On Sunday August 28th 2011 Long Island Power Authority reported that:

As Hurricane Irene exits Long Island and New York City this evening, the 36 hours of heavy rain and severe winds have created significant power outages along the eastern coast, including LIPA’s service territory. At the height of the storm, approximately 500,000 customers were without power. As of 8:30 pm, 82,000 (16%) customers have been restored.

Customers may have experienced problems reaching LIPA by phone, such as a fast busy signal. Verizon, our phone carrier, experienced technical problems which were due to extraordinary call volume. LIPA continues to work with Verizon to resolve this issue and we apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

The majority of outages resulted from hurricane force winds uprooting trees and taking down power lines.
