It's the morning of Tuesday October 30th 2012. Hurricane Sandy crossed the coast of New Jersey yesterday evening, and (amongst other things) subjected New Jersey to an unprecedented storm surge. Here's how the First Energy power outage map for Jersey Central looks at this moment:

On the morning of Tuesday August 30th 2011 Jersey Central Power & Light reported that:

As a result of Hurricane Irene, more than 920,000 FirstEnergy customers in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland were without power.  To date, electrical service has been restored to more than 640,000 customers. Crews continue working to restore service to the approximately 280,000 customers who remain without power as a result of the storm.

The current FirstEnergy outage totals by utility include:

  • Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) – 240,000 customers
  • Metropolitan Edison (Met-Ed) – 35,000 customers
  • Pennsylvania Electric Company (Penelec) – 7,000 customers

Many of the areas that remain without power experienced severe flooding as a result of the storm, which has hampered the damage assessment and restoration process.  Many of these outages are isolated and will require a significant number of repairs to bring small numbers of customers back in service.

At 5:43 PM on Monday August 29th 2011 Jersey Central Power & Light Outage reported that:

We anticipate that the majority of our Customers will be restored by the weekend with full restoration by early next week. Please treat all downed wires and damaged electrical equipment as live and dangerous. At the peak, 670,000 customers were affected, with 320,000 restored at this time.

On the morning of Monday August 29th 2011 First Energy reported that:

As a result of Hurricane Irene, more than 850,000 FirstEnergy customers in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland were without power. To date, electrical service has been restored to more than 400,000 customers.

Crews continue working to restore service to another 450,000 customers who remain without power as a result of the storm.

The current FirstEnergy outage totals by utility include:

  • Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) – 380,000 customers
  • Metropolitan Edison (Met-Ed) – 70,000 customers

While crews are making progress, debris from downed trees and limbs and areas of heavy flooding are hampering restoration efforts. Many of these outages are isolated and will require a significant number of repairs to bring small numbers of customers back in service.

On Sunday August 28th 2011 First Energy's Jersey Light and Power reported that:

Currently, there are more than 450,000 customers without power as a result of the storm, with more than 100,000 already restored.
