Public Service Enterprise Group Power Outage Map – New Jersey – North

Public Service Enterprise Group issued a press release on the evening of November 3rd. They said that:

Our biggest challenge is in Hoboken, where our stations were submersed in more than 3 feet of water. It took several days for this water to recede. Much of the equipment was corroded by salt water and needs extensive work. We have more than 100 out-of-state workers who specialize in substation repairs, many of whom are concentrating their efforts in Hoboken.

PSE&G is working with FEMA to get large-scale generators from the federal government to key spots in the city to provide relief to residents.

To provide relief to particularly hard hit communities, PSE&G has established mobile Customer Service Centers (CSCs).  These locations are providing ice, drinking water and power strips for recharging devices to PSE&G customers at no cost.  Food is being given out at PSE&G’s centers in Newark, Jersey City and Hoboken.   PSE&G representatives are staffing these centers to provide customers with information about the utility’s efforts to restore power.  The current list of PSE&G Mobile CSCs is as follows.

Town Location Hours of Ops
Hoboken CVS Parking Lot, 59 Washington Ave. 24/7
Moonachie Red Neck Grove (John Stevens Baseball Field) 8-9 pm
Paramus Paramus Park Mall 8-9 pm
Jersey City Westside and Claremont Ave 8-4 pm
Newark St James Church Parking Lot (Elm St and Madison St) 8-4 pm

It's the morning of Tuesday October 30th 2012. Hurricane Sandy crossed the coast of New Jersey yesterday evening, and (amongst other things) subjected New Jersey to an unprecedented storm surge. Here's how the Public Service Enterprise Group power outage map for Northern New Jersey looks at this moment:

The numbers on the map are rather imprecise, but according to a PSE&G press release:

PSE&G is reporting more than 1.2 million customers are without power due to the extreme wind and severe flooding resulting from the storm surge, which affected a large number of substations in Essex, Hudson and Middlesex counties. PSE&G has taken these stations out of service until the water recedes, the equipment can be cleaned and dried, and the stations can be safely re-energized. These stations serve about 462,000 customers.

PSE&G urges customers to prepare for the possibility of lengthy outages – perhaps seven days or more — due to the enormity of Hurricane Sandy.

At 9 AM on Tuesday August 30th 2011 Public Service Enterprise Group reported that:

PSE&G has restored electric service to about 670,000 customers affected by the hurricane and has made substantial progress during the past 48 hours. We are working to restore the remaining 70,000 customers statewide. The company expects restoration of all customers within the next 4 to 6 days.

In addition to downed trees and wires, flooding has posed a major restoration challenge, especially in counties like Bergen, Middlesex, Somerset and Union. Employees are drying and cleaning flooded substations so they can put circuits from those stations back on line and restore customers. Flood waters are preventing employees from entering a number of other areas. Customers, particularly in flooded areas, should be prepared for lengthy outages until flood waters recede and crews can safely enter.
