Con Edison Power Outage Map – New York City

Con Ed issued a press release at 11:00 PM on Thursday November 8th 2012 making it clear that about 35,000 customers in coastal areas were not being counted in the numbers displayed on their power outage map:

The company is also working with the New York City Buildings Department to expedite the restoration of an additional 35,000 customers in Staten Island, Brooklyn and Queens whose electrical equipment may have been damaged by flooding and cannot be safely re-energized without repairs by an electrician.

The customers requiring inside-the-premises electrical work are not listed on the Con Edison Outage Map or included in the total number of outages reported by the company. Con Edison and the New York City Buildings Department are collaborating to guide customers through the process of repairing their own equipment. For information, click here: http://www.coned.com/es/Energy-Services-Flyer.pdf.

Crews are working to restore outages in the following areas: Queens, 13,700; Brooklyn, 6,100; Staten Island, 3,000; the Bronx, 2,700; and Westchester, 19,500, and about 200 customers in Manhattan.

Con Edison continues to urge customers in Lower Manhattan who were affected by Hurricane Sandy outages to conserve energy as much as possible while crews work to reinforce the underground electric system. Customers can help by refraining from using non-essential appliances such as washers and dryers. Con Edison is in contact with building owners to encourage limiting use of certain elevator banks or other electrical equipment.

Con Ed didn't announce any dry ice distribution yesterday, presumably because of what The Weather Channel has decided to call "Winter Storm Athena". However at 9:00 AM on Thursday November 8th 2012 they announced further distributions of dry ice:

It's the morning of Tuesday October 30th 2012. Hurricane Sandy crossed the coast of New Jersey yesterday evening, and (amongst other things) subjected New York City to an unprecedented storm surge. Here's how the Con Edison power outage map looks at this moment:

At 7:45 AM on Tuesday August 30th 2011 Con Edison reported that:

Con Edison crews have restored electric service to 80 percent of the customers affected by Hurricane Irene.

Approximately 150,100 of the 187,800 customers who lost power as a result of the storm have been restored to service. Nearly all New York City customer restorations are expected to be completed late tonight, and nearly all Westchester customers are expected back in service by late Thursday night.

Flooded roads, inundated manholes, and littered and twisted tree limbs, trunks, and downed wires continue to hamper restoration efforts.

At 3:45 PM on Monday August 29th 2011 Con Edison reported that:

Due to the overwhelming demand for dry ice all along the East Coast, supplies are extremely limited.  Con Edison will distribute dry ice today until supplies run out.  The company will schedule further distribution if more dry ice becomes available.

The company has distributed 80,000 pounds of dry ice since yesterday.  Con Edison apologizes for any inconvenience to customers.

At 5:30 AM on Monday August 29th 2011 Con Edison announced that it would be distributing dry ice in New York City:

Dry ice will be distributed on Monday, August 29, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Instructions for safe handling and disposal are printed on the bag for residents who pick up dry ice. Dry ice is frozen carbon dioxide and should be used only in well-ventilated areas. Keep children and pets safely away.

At 7:00 AM on Monday August 29th 2011 Con Edison reported that:

As New Yorkers say good riddance to the hurricane that shuttered the transit system and brought the city to a virtual halt, over 106,000 of the utility’s 3.2 million customers remain out of service.

Con Edison crews spent most of Sunday assessing the damage and prioritizing work, even as they and crews from as far away as Texas, Colorado and Kansas managed to restore 81,900 customers as of early this morning.  Con Edison said 187,900 customers lost power as a result of Irene.

At 6:30 PM on Sunday August 28th 2011 Con Edison reported that:

Con Edison has restored electrical service to approximately 39,000 customers in New York City and Westchester County after Hurricane Irene’s severe winds toppled trees, poles and cables.

Customers without service due to Hurricane Irene peaked around 1 p.m. today with 121,000 customers out in all five boroughs and Westchester County.

At 7:00 AM on Sunday August 28th 2011 Con Edison reported that:

72,000 customers in New York City and Westchester County have lost electrical service because of severe winds resulting from Hurricane Irene.  As the weather system continues to move toward New York, the number of affected customers is expected to grow.

The hurricane’s high winds also have toppled trees and power lines throughout the company’s service area, most extensively in Queens, where an estimated 25,000 customers are without power.

As of 7 a.m., customer outages on Staten Island have reached more than 16,000; in Brooklyn, 6,000 are out of power; and the Bronx is reporting 4,500. There are minimal outages in Manhattan.  There are more than 16,000 out of power in Westchester County.

Comments on Con Edison – New York City »

August 29, 2011

Kasia @ 2:23 pm

Put it in the right context…..I don't know exactly the numbers but there are millions of people in the world without water and food and so every day without the prospect of change. Who cares about million of New Yorkers without electricity just for a few days?

Jim Jim @ 3:54 pm

Hi Kasia,

Is that just a rhetorical question? New Yorkers are people too, and most of them don't work on Wall Street.

However it is indeed the case that in some parts of the planet many more people have to survive without electricity, not to mention other even more essential things, for much much longer.

November 6, 2012

FRANK @ 2:48 pm

WHERE IS THE HEAT AND HOT WATER FOR LOWER MANATHAN 10 DAYS

Jim Jim @ 10:30 pm

Hi Frank,

Whilst I appreciate your frustration, I'm merely reporting events from the other side of the Atlantic.

Con Ed seem to be communicating via social media first and then press releases. There's various links at the top to those places. The outage map currently suggests electricity should be back everywhere by 11:59 PM on the 9th, which seems unlikely at the moment I'm afraid. This press release suggests there are still lots of electrical things that need fixing in Mid and Lower Manhattan.

On Con Ed's steam web site they say that:

"Our plans are to restore service to all customers by November 11."
