The econnexus Irene Power Project

The econnexus Irene Power Project will attempt to keep track of when the lights went out as Hurricane Irene slowly worked her way up the Eastern seaboard of the United States of America, and also when they came back on again.  We hope in this way to learn some things that will help to improve matters the next time such an "unexpected event" occurs.

Can you explain more about the project. Are you going to write an software or are you going to collect the statistics?

Hi Kasia,

Amongst other things the intention is to acquire at least some "anecdotal" statistics, just in case nobody else eventually gets around to producing the definitive version.

It's also of interest to see how the power utilities communicate with their customers, including using their websites and social networking sites even though many of those customers unfortunately have no electricity! I guess the batteries in assorted mobile devices last a long time these days?

Finally I also have a professional interest in these matters. I'm on a smart grid working group for example. How would a fully fledged "smart grid" have coped in such circumstances? How much would it have helped? How much will it cost!
